Since 2005, Kamil Vojnar, born in the former Czechoslovakia, now Czech Republic, has worked from his studio and atelier in Saint Remy de Provence, France.
Over the past 20 years Vojnar has developed his visually compelling metaphorical photographic compositions using meticulous processes of collaging, interweaving and layering, then adding unexpected details using various methods and mediums.
By way of sepia-toned imagery, essentially his work explores themes of nostalgia and romanticism. His intention is to create a collision and a surreal dynamic interplay between the past and the present. Whether there are floating soulful figures with angel wings or monochrome suited men, there lies the suggestion of a theatrical narrative ready for a delicate unpicking by the onlooker. Different sized colour-contrasting squares are at times placed around a particular element, a face for example, or a splash of vivid colour - there to draw in and encourage the viewer to look more closely and perhaps reach beyond a nostalgic viewpoint to a more profound dialogue linking memories, whether poignant or distant, with emotional experiences of the present.
He began his studies at the Prague School of Graphic Arts, specialising in graphic design and illustration (1976–1981). Then in 1986 he left the still communist Czechoslovakia to expand his horizons and continue his education at the Art Institute of Philadelphia followed by The Art Student’s League in New York City. Before opening his studio in Saint Remy, Vojnar enjoyed a successful career as a designer, photographer and illustrator with his work appearing in countless magazines, books, newspapers and on both cd and book covers commissioned by high profile clients such as New York Times, Boston Globe and various publishing houses in Paris, London, Prague and New York.
Since 1997 Vojnar has been fully emerged in his fine art practice, regularly exhibiting in galleries, photography exhibitions and festivals across Europe, USA and Canada. He has had his work featured in many art and photography publications such as, Vis a Vis Magazine (Paris), Photo District (New York), Atlantic Monthly, Zoom Magazine (Italy), Eyemazing (Netherlands) and Fine Art Photo (Germany).
