"My work derives presence from natural elements that surround me daily. I take cues from the physical world: light, water, reflection, land, mass, clouds, volume. I do not paint a specific place but at the same time my subconscious guides and filters my practice considerng the places I have visited and documented.‘Crossing the Light Sublime’ is a body of work which began on the island of Sint Maarten and was completed in the mountains of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is a story of history and the present. The consideration of how our lives are affected by the places where we live and visit. Both places could not be more different yet they share an uncanny commonality when considered in my work. Each provides distant vistas and cloud formations that evoke a time long forgotten. Both exhibit a development that came about after exploration and religion brought a light both harsh and warm. Although Santa Fe is land bound, an island at 2000 meters above sea level, it still summons the depths of the inland sea that once surrounded its perimeter. Echoes of time, history, and splendid beauty infuse my work and the light that rises in the Caribbean seems to thread its way to sunset in the American West".PETER BUREGA - October 2025Peter Burega's work has been described as possessing an embodiment of dualities: between organic and linear, man-made and nature, structure and amorphous, order and chaos; a clash between expressive abstracted energy and structured uniformity. Moreover, his work is ‘Turneresque’, with its suggestion of dramatic expansive skies and poignant filtrating light. The presence of this dichotomy is what defines Burega’s authorship and gives his compositions both their poetry and their strength.
'CROSSING THE LIGHT SUBLIME' will be Peter Burega's inaugural solo exhibition in London, and is directly following his annual solo show at LewAllen Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico in October. The exhibition will present a stunning curated collection of approximately eleven landscapes and seascapes painted while he has been resident in Sint Maarten and in Santa Fe, New Mexico during 2025.
