Mecox Beach in Bridgehampton, Long Island, New York, has a rich history as a source of
artistic inspiration. A landscape shaped as much by light as by land and sea. Light moves
differently here, thickened by air and water - often called "The Mecox Light,". A presence that seems to rise from the ground itself. Heavy with moisture, the air holds sunlight differently, scattering it, softening it, turning it luminous. The result is an ethereal, shimmering glow - hallucinatory, fleeting, alive.
This quality exists within a meeting point: where the restless Atlantic Ocean meets the quieter, brackish waters of Mecox Bay. A threshold between energies - constant movement set against stillness.
In the spring of 2019 David Magee returned to this shoreline repeatedly, arriving in darkness and waiting for the slow emergence of first light. These solitary hours, spent between night and day, became a process of observation - allowing the landscape to reveal itself gradually. Working in this way, time seemed to soften. Attention sharpened. Small, elemental changes - light shifting across water, waves marking
and erasing the sand - became the focus.
The pictures created during this period are not descriptions of a place, but reflections of an experience. An exploration of presence, and of the subtle space between stillness and movement, light and time.
