Reimagined for contemporary times as an allegory of peace and vanity. In Milner's version, all of the animals remain, with exception of Aphrodite. The creatures, some looking towards the dove, represent world leaders, the cheetah in particular, on the lower right represents Narcissus looking at his own reflection. Rivière was considered the successor to Britain's great animalier Sir Edwin Landseer. Aphrodite is a scene showing the goddess of love and beauty surrounded by a group of wild animals, seemingly under her spell. The painting was inspired by a scene derived from a Homeric hymn (8th-6th centuries BC).
