David Magee is an internationally recognised fine art photographer whose meditative landscapes invite moments of stillness, contemplation and emotional connection. Working at the threshold between observation and abstraction, his photographs transcend the traditional landscape, exploring nature not simply as a place, but as an experience. Through subtle light, texture and atmosphere, Magee creates evocative works that encourage viewers to pause, reflect and discover their own relationship with the natural world.
Born in County Cork, Ireland (1963), Magee studied at Crawford Municipal School of Art in Cork before completing a BA (Hons) at the Glasgow School of Art and Design. His distinctive style has since earned him international recognition, with numerous awards and exhibitions celebrating his contribution to contemporary fine art photography.
For over 40 years, Magee has created pictures in the landscape of haunting beauty. Not landscape images in the traditional sense of the word but rather creative observations and interpretations of the natural world, imbued with spiritual and physical energy and mystique. Each work is a result of many hours walking, climbing, exploring and connecting with the elemental. Primarily non-representational, they are less about actual place and more an exploration of inner experience.
Magee has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards since 2018 including, The Paris Photography Prize (PX3), Gold and Silver Award Winner; Fine Art Photography Awards (FAPA), London, Gold Award Winner; The Lucie Awards, Finalist, New York; International Photography Awards (IPA); New York and the Tokyo International Foto Awards; Moscow International Foto Awards, Moscow, Silver and Gold Award Winner.
‘Outside’, a 25-year retrospective, was published to international acclaim in 2017, followed by ‘Outside II’ in 2021, earning rave reviews. An example of which is below:
"David Magee’s Outside II is everything a photobook should be, then more, and then more
after that. Just in terms of book design, the volume is elegant and impressive. And the images, the seascapes and grasses and rocks, are compelling invitations to linger and examine not only the scene but our own hearts in response. This is wonderful work."
